Runway Report, LFW Day 1

Lakme Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2010 kicked off yesterday and on the first day’s schedule were the following designers:

12 Noon -

ROCKY S PRESENTS QUEENIE FOR GIANTTI1:30 PM – BABITA MALKANI/ LIBAS BY RIYAZ GANGJI/ VIZYON

3:00 PM – SHYAMAL & BHUMIKA/ NIKASHA

5:00 PM – KRISHNA MEHTA

7:00 PM – PRIA KATAARIA PURI

9:30 PM – SAMIRA HABITATS PRESENTS SABYASACHI

As usual, I will present just a snapshot of the images/designs that appealed to me the best. This year though, I won’t be posting pictures of the token Bollywood celebrity inevitably taking the ramp (e.g., Bipasha for Rocky S). After all, this is supposed to be a ‘fashion show’ not a ‘kiss Bollywood’s collective ass’ show. Similarly, I also won’t be fawning over the overhyped but little talented designers (ahem, Manish Malhotra) nor the talented but really can’t understand the talent designers (e.g., Sabyasachi, Manish Arora). Unless ofcourse they totally blow me away! Alas, that didn’t happen with Sabya’s collection, which was a mish-mash of textures, prints, lengths, and cuts. I wasn’t sure if he was going for the 70s hippie look or the homeless beggar look. That being said, here are a few of my favorites from Day 1.

 - Nikasha Tawadey’s soft, dreamy, frothy concoctions was a different take on the churidar.

  - Although I didn’t dig Pria Kataaria Puri’s psychedelic prints or the way the runway competed with the clothing, I did like her bright blue kaftan.

 - The Libas by Riyaz Gangji collection included some tame but well-cut men’s suits, in particular this one I liked. On an aside, Pooja Bedi walked the ramp for them. Yeah, exactly, who!?

  - The ‘Rocky S presents Queenie for Giantti‘ collection included bridal outfits fit for a trousseau, as well as jewelry by Queenie. I didn’t really notice the jewelry (um, what does that say about the jewelry?) but of the collection, these were my favorites.

   - Of all the designers from Day 1, Vizyon by Ayush and Shradha Murarka was my absolute favorite. The collection included elegant evening wear with intricate pleats, layers, zippers and corset detailing. All those details didn’t overwhelm but made the wearer look ethereal. On an aside, how awesome is it to see a bald model! She was on many of the shows on Day 1, not sure what her name is.

LFW Autumn 2009 – Best of Day 4

Best of Day 4 of Lakme Fashion Week Autumn 2009, which included designers Anand Bhushan, Kiran and Meghna; Neha Agarwal; Ayan and Preetika; Jyotee Khaitan; Pallavi Jaipur; Wendell Rodricks; Narendra Kumar; Manish Gupta; Paras and Shalini; Shyamal and Bhumika; Nachiket Barve; Nikasha Tawadey; Tarun Tahiliani and Manish Malhotra.

LIFW, Day 2 – Shyamal and Bhumika

For ethnic wear, Bollywood Fashion Police staffers agreed that they loved the Shyamal and Bhumika collection, which consisted of traditional lehengas, sarees and shalwars with intricate zardozi and mirror work. Colors like pink and green dominated but were paired together in a complementary manner. The fabric was Indian but the cuts were all fusion, for both the men’s as well as the women’s collections.
